Crowns
The indications for the use of a crown over the years have changed due to the major advances in porcelain technology. If an accident has resulted in a chipped or broken tooth or if you are missing a tooth, especially if it's a front tooth, you may feel self-conscious about smiling broadly. Using high quality tooth coloured crowns, Dr Fadi Yassmin and the team at Broadway Dental Centre can restore your smile and help you regain your confidence.
A crown is a versatile restoration designed to cover a single tooth, which is why they're sometimes called a cap. A crown provides protection and strength to the remaining structure of a tooth that has lost a large filling, sustained an injury in an accident or undergone root canal therapy.
For a crown preparation, the patient is required to undertake two appointments. One is to prepare the tooth for treatment and the other is to fit the crown. During the first appointment a thin layer of enamel is removed from all surfaces of the tooth. From here, impressions are taken to record exactly how you bite together so that we can ensure your new tooth will be properly fitted. We will place a temporary crown over the prepared tooth for a period of approximately two weeks so that the laboratory can make the new crown. The dental technician, known as a ceramist, will custom-shade the new crown to match your existing and surrounding teeth colour, to ensure the smile is a perfect blend and looks as close to your original tooth colour as possible.
During the second appointment, the temporary crown will be gently removed and your new crown will be placed. The crown will be checked for fit, size, shape and colour before it is permanently cemented to your tooth. Here we can decide whether adjustments are needed or we can proceed with the process of cementation. The cementation process involves using cement that bonds to your tooth and crown.
