White Fillings

White fillings can be used to replace mercury or gold restorations, or even new cavities. They provide a more natural tooth-like appearance, and by nature of their chemistry they allow a more conservative approach to the restoration of teeth.

Large long term mercury fillings are likely to cause the surrounding tooth structure to fracture. Mercury fillings are packed under pressure and as a direct result they put undue stresses on the natural tooth structure, which will in time, give way.

White fillings are used to restore diseased teeth and there is no need to extend or drill into healthy tooth structure as would be the case with the old style treatments.

After the safe removal of the decay using a special dye and laser to indicate the extent of the lesion, a whole filling can be bonded to the affected area.

Depending on the size and extent of the decay present, there are two treatment options. The first being a composite resin filling procedure. This is a direct procedure that can be completed on the day of your visit. For larger broken down teeth an indirect restoration may be required. These are known as inlays or onlays depending on the size. These are custom made in a laboratory using high grade porcelains for strength and durability.
